Presented is a fantastic quality Mettlach lidded beer or ale pitcher, #2183. The
pitcher features a lively scene of drinking gnomes, surrounded by hops and other
foliage, with three inscriptions: 'Gut Gekaut ist halb verdaut,' 'Ein guter
Trunk, macht Alte jung,' and 'Ein guter Tropfen aus Gerste & Kopfen, Das
sind die besten Lebenstropfen.' (“Well chewed is half digested,” “A good drink
makes the old young,” and “A good drop with barley and hops is the best elixir
in life.”) The pitcher is a very generous size, with a capacity of 3.25 liters.
The underside is signed Mettlach as well as the identifying number 2183 with
incised lettering, as well as a green Villeroy & Boch and Made in Germany
stamp.
